Standard 3.1 | Social Responsibility & Empathy
Candidates create experiences for learners to make positive, socially responsible contributions and exhibit empathetic behavior online that build relationships and community. (PSC-IT 3.1/ISTE-E 3a)
Contextualization: My learners are pre-service teachers preparing for teaching experiences in the pre-K to the fifth-grade classroom. This lesson allowed students to engage in a Twitter chat and apply their understanding of using social responsible behaviors online. We started by discussing the importance of “accountable talk” and how to be empathic and responsible with their online posts. This led to a discussion of how to implement “accountable talk” in their own classroom activities with elementary-aged students. Many agreed that students should be introduced to accountable talk responses initially through their class conversations and as a way to teach conflict management. Students posted their responses to their learning in the Twitter chat demonstrating the understanding of the need to be empathetic and post positive socially contributions in their online posts that build relationships and communities.
